GRANT TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The following policy guidelines are applicable to all PA Foundation grants.

  1. Research must be original and innovative primary research.
  2. The principal investigator must be a member of the staff of the Princess Alexandra Hospital or a University Department within the Hospital. Principal Investigators must be able to demonstrate independence in research. The Foundation wishes to encourage new researchers and the independence of the applicant will be judged on a case by case basis.
  3. Grants will not normally be made to more than one project with the same principal investigator in any one year, however, supervisors of PhD students may nominate as mentors of these students.
  4. The Research Committee of the Foundation may seek independent expert reviews of any particular project. Recommendations for funding are made by the Research Committee to the Foundation board on the basis of merit. Grants made by the Foundation are dependent on funds available. The Foundation is not obliged to make any particular award in any year.
  5. Grants monies are not to be spent on the following:
    • Payment of salaries for locums to allow the recipient relief from his/her usual activities
    • Attendance at conferences (except for Scholarship Grants)
    • Establishment of databases
    • Items of equipment that would normally be provided by the hospital, including general
  6. Successful applicants will not be part of a group already benefiting from a Reseach Grant but will seek to conduct their research in a supportive and collaborative group environment.
  7. In the case of a Training Grant applicants will be able to apply for a particular project over a maximum of 3 years under the following conditions:
    • Successful applicants will be able to apply for a second year pending a satisfactory report being presented.
    • To be eligible to apply for a third year the applicant must be able to provide evidence of having applied for external funding during the second year.
  8. Requirements of awardees
    • Acknowledgement of the Foundation’s support in all publications
    • Annual progress reports due 30 November. These should be 1-2 pages in length and contain progress against goals, future directions and details of papers published.
    • Cooperation with the Foundation in terms of publicity where such publicity is reasonable given issues of confidentiality, patents etc.
    • Cooperation with the Foundation in terms of presenting to supporter groups of the Foundation, provided requests by the Foundation are reasonable ie 2-3 times per year maximum.
    • Non-fulfillment of these requirements may adversely affect future grant applications.
  9. Grant payment process For tax reasons any grant funding will be made available to you through your employer. Normally, for grants of $10,000 and above your employer must invoice the Foundation on a quarterly basis for the funds. Exceptions to this timing of payments can be made in special circumstances, e.g. Private Practice Grants. Should your application be successful, the Foundation will formally notify your employer of the available funds. You will be copied on this correspondence. A six monthly account noting transactions and balance of your funds will be forwarded by the Foundation to you and your employer.
  10. Scholarship Grants may be applied for directly to the PA Foundation by the recipient in the case of conference attendance. More details available on request.
